Message from the Director

It is both a privilege and challenge to be leading the DOST-ASTI at this point in its 30 year history. A privilege because the Institute has been at the forefront in ICT and Electronics R&D in the Philippines. Since the 1990s, DOST-ASTI has undertaken a number of projects in the areas of advanced network technologies and high performance computing, including pioneering efforts in open source software, IPv6, VoIP along with establishing globally-connected research and education networks and local Internet exchanges that were ahead of the industry. With these initiatives, the DOST-ASTI has helped shape the local technology landscape to keep abreast of global developments.

ASTI-developed products ranging from electronic data acquisition, biomedical and environmental monitoring systems have literally spread across the country - supporting nationwide initiatives in public health, e-governance, education and disaster risk management for a productive and resilient Filipino society. Amidst formidable challenges in local scientific R&D, the DOST-ASTI has dedicated itself to delivering technology solutions to pressing national problems.

Technological innovation continues unabated around the world, however. As the DOST-Advanced Science and Technology Institute, it is our challenge to set our sights on the frontiers – to push at the boundaries, set the pace and direction of future technologies. Today's tools will not be enough for tomorrow's problems. Our vision of DOST-ASTI is that of a robust and progressive R&D institution that contributes directly and efficiently to creating the future of technology for Filipinos.

Through the dedication, innovation, skill and execution ethic that DOST-ASTI has ably demonstrated over the past 30 years, we will strive to build even higher and deeper as we move forward. A daunting task, but a challenge that all of us have taken on and pledged to deliver.

About Us

Over the years, the emergence of information and communications technology has greatly affected the lives of people in the world crossing borders among countries and bringing access closer to one another. In the same token, the birth of Microelectronics has resulted to progress in the development of smaller, lighter and more efficient electronic devices.

This development has a striking resemblance to the birth of one of the research and development institutes of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) – the Advanced Science and Technology Institute (ASTI). It was in 1987 when President Corazon C. Aquino renamed the then National Science and Technology Authority (NSTA) to Department of Science and Technology (DOST). As an offshoot of such sequential events, the DOST-ASTI was created as a research and development institute of the Department by virtue of Executive Order No. 128.
